Six On Saturday: New Uses For Easter Things

With Easter being about a week away...
I thought I would give you some ideas for reusing Easter goodies.
I realize the chocolate will be all gone. ;)

1) Plastic Easter egg containers as snack holders. Give those eggs a year-around use by filling them with snack like crackers and Cheerios for your little ones.

2) Egg carton as a paint palette. Use a leftover egg carton for a custom paint palette for an afternoon art session.

3) Paper shred your own Easter grass. Feed colorful gift-wrapping tissue paper through your shredder to produce instant Easter-basket grass.

4) Easter grass as packing material. Don't trash that Easter grass, use it as packing material for delicate items. Then you will have no need to worry if whether your favorite bottle of Chardonnay will make it to your best friend unscathed.

5) Easter baskets as friendly gift holders. Reuse Easter baskets with treats--a batch of fresh made cookies, flowers, maybe baking items and jams--for a surprise on your best friend or your neighbor.

6) Eggshell as seedling planter starter. Use a pin to poke a hole in the bottom of an empty egg shell. Then put it in an egg carton and fill with soil. Once your seedling appears, plant the whole thing in the ground. The shell will disintegrate and nourish the soil.

The Story Of A Can, A Frame and Some Paint

Once upon a time, alright it was actually a few weeks ago, I was Spring cleaning our back yard when I came upon my son's old toy watering can. I was going to throw it out and then I had an idea...maybe a little paint would bring this can back to life. Hmmm...

So I grabbed the can and some sand paper. It was time to rub those frogs into history! Nothing personal frogs, just business decoration. ;)

Then I brought out the primer and applied a few coats. Maybe I could have skipped this step, but I didn't want to risk those frogs coming back to life!

I let that dry and then I grabbed a can of Heirloom White spray paint. After a few coats I was liking what I was seeing. :)

I think I was able to give this can a new life and probably in a month I will give this can back to my son to play with in the backyard. (Thanks for letting me borrow it, S!)

Now that you know the story of the watering can, let me tell you about a white picture frame. I have been wanting to make a little chalkboard framed sign for a few months now. I didn't really want to paint the picture frame glass as I would like to be able to reuse the frame whenever creativity strikes.

What to do?  I remembered I had a piece of thin plywood leftover in my garage from a previous building project. I grabbed it and removed the glass from the frame and placed it on top, using it as my guide. I traced it then grabbed my saw and cut it down to the perfect fit.

It was then time to pull out the chalkboard paint. I carefully painted on one coat and let it dry.

The next day I conditioned the board (fancy way to say I rubbed some chalk on the board and then wiped it off), found a lovely Spring quote and grabbed my chalk marker.  What? Chalk marker? Yes! These are the coolest things! I found my set at Hobby Lobby and I used a 40% off coupon. Nice.

I wish I was better at free-hand drawing. I tried to be creative with a couple of the words...

I am so into the butterfly thing this year!! I had to add one to the frame. I simply hot glued him on. Easy peasy.

So that's the story of the watering can and the white picture frame. They came together to make a lovely Spring display.

The watering can is now in bloom with beautiful company...a pitcher of Cherry Blossoms. I always like my displays to be balanced (Yes, I know that is a little O.C.D.) so I filled a jar with some Spanish moss and a few eggs.

Just so I can show you the bigger picture...

I love how the display looks in front of my Potterybarn knock-off mirror. I explained how I made that in this post here

The rest of this story will best be summarized with few words, but lots more pictures! :)

And I think we all know how the story ends. They lived happily ever after. Well, until the kid grabs the can and heads for the back yard. Then yea, it's all over. :)

DIY: Spring Hydrangea Wreath

Happy Monday to you! I had a very productive weekend. I was able to clean my house and make a few more Spring projects. One of which I will share with you now...my DIY Spring Hydrangea Wreath.

This wreath was easy and cheap. Not always the best qualities,
but for a do-it-yourself project...they are perfect! ;)

I gathered up my coupons, matched with some great sales and snagged my supplies.

And no DIY project can start without a little healthy snack. :)

First, I cut the stems off my hydrangea flowers leaving about a one inch stub.
Then I stuck them into the wreath without any hot glue just to see the placement.

Sorry for the busy background,
I used my sons Mickey Mouse placemat to protect my table. :)
Once I had everything in place,
I gently pulled out one flower at a time and hot glued.
The butterflies were simply clipped-on with attached clips.

And that's it! Totally cost was under $10 bucks.
It took me about 15 minutes from start to hanging it on the door!

So, is it looking like Spring at your house?

Six On Saturday: New Uses For Baking Soda

I am sure we have all used baking soda to freshen our carpets,
but it has so many other uses.

1) Use baking soda as a hair cleanser.  Add a pinch of baking soda to your shampoo once a week to remove buildup. Getting squeaky-clean hair is a piece of cake!

2) Baking soda as a container deodorizer. Soak plastic containers in warm water and baking soda overnight to banish smells.

3) Polish your silver to a beautiful shine. Wash your items, then place on aluminum foil in the bottom of a pot. Add a baking soda solution ( 1/4 cup soda, a few teaspoons salt, 1 quart boiling water) and cover for a few seconds. The results will amaze you!

4) Get your drain running again. Pour 1/2 cup soda, then 1/2 cup vinegar, down a clogged drain. Cover it with a wet wash cloth, wait 5 minutes, uncover, and flush with steaming-hot water.

5) Freshen your linen. Place an open box of baking soda alongside your stacks of sheets and towels to starve off mustiness.

6) Remove those coffee and tea stains. Clean discolored cups by making a paste of baking soda and water. Gently rub over the stain to remove.

Do you know any other great uses for baking soda?
